Joho sentenced to 60 days in jail or Sh250,000 fine
Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, or pay a fine of Sh250,000 for overseeing demolition of a private property in violation of a court order.
Sila Munyao, the Environment and Land Court Judge, noted that the county boss demolished Mombasa tycoon Ashok Doshi’s perimeter wall in Changamwe on May 10, 2019, despite the existence of a court order prohibiting the destruction.
The governor was accused of hiring 100 goons to bring down the Sh2 million wall. He was consequently summoned to court, but failed to appear on multiple occasions.
On March 6, 2019, Lady Justice Ann Omollo granted Doshi protection from the destruction of his wall by the County Government of Mombasa over land dispute.
Joho has been punished alongside Changamwe MCA Bernard Ogutu, who has been fined Sh20,000 or 14 days’ imprisonment.
Unlike Joho, Ogutu appeared in court but was found guilty of defying a court order regarding his involvement in the demolition of Doshi’s perimeter wall.
